Walking in a garden at the close of day

Here is the back garden joining Rivercourt House with Latymer House. It is an oasis of peace and quiet - but this photo shows no flowers.

Walking in a garden at the close of day,
Adam tried to hide him when he heard God say:
'Why are you so frightened, why are you afraid?
You have brought the winter in, made the flowers fade'.

This verse of course refers to our fall from grace in the Garden of Eden - that is original sin entering the world. On Sunday we will see plenty of flowers as we meditate on the Easter Garden, with Jesus Christ conquering the power of sin and death. A theme expressed so well by Cardinal Newman in his great hymn 'Praise to the Holiest in the height'.

By the way, John Henry Newman loved staying in Ham (where I live) when he was a boy!
