1st Sunday of Advent

The season of Advent has begun - the cheerful green vestments of Ordinary Time have been put away, and we are in purple. But it is not all doom and gloom - Jesus, the Light of the World is waiting to visit us. The darkness of winter is about to be shattered by the dazzling light of Bethlehem. So, we wait and pray! Today we have lit the first candle on our Advent Wreath. This is not Tenebrae - the light is increasing - Alleluia!

Let us pray in Advent time with longing and waiting for the coming of the Lord.

Father in heaven,
our hearts desire the warmth of your love
and our minds are searching for the light of your Word.
Increase our longing for Christ our Saviour
and give us the strength to grow in love,
that the dawn of his coming
may find us rejoicing in his presence
and welcoming the light of his truth.
We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

Happy Sunday!

Stay awake! Be ready! No greenery on the wreath? Mgr Mark censed and blessed the wreath this evening and Philip lit the first candle.

Yes, no greenery. We will have to wait for the Christmas tree for that - and the extra winter foliage which we decorate the Chapel with for Christmastide. When it does arrive, in stays in place until Candlemas - so I'm glad we don't use it during Advent! I like the contrast of the seasons.
